Moslem Uddin Ahmad, a valiant freedom fighter and lawmaker from the Chittagong-8 constituency, passed away at a hospital in the capital early Monday. He was 73.
He breathed his last around 12:38am while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital.
Moslem Uddin had been suffering from terminal cancer for two years, said the lawmaker's nephew Lokman Chowdhury.
The lawmaker, also the President of Chittagong South Awami League, was elected Vice President of Government Commerce College in 1969 and participated in the Great Liberation War responding to the call of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Moslem Uddin.
In a condolence message, the prime minister said that "Bangladesh Awami League has lost a dedicated leader in the death of Moslem Uddin."
She prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved members of his family.
