The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) has arrested Mehedi Hasan Ome alias Rafi who was on bail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Mohammadpur Police Station in the capital.

CTTC head Md Asadizzaman said accused Ome who was on bail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act has been shown arrested in a case involving snatching two militants from the Dhaka Judge Court premises.

Details will be disclosed at a press conference on Thursday morning, he said.

Twelve accused who were arrested in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act were brought at Dhaka Judge Court by a prison van from Kashimpur-2 High Security Prison on Sunday morning. They were later taken to the Anti-Terrorism Tribunal-8 housed at the CJM court building for appearing before the judge at about 9:40am. After hearing of the case, Md Idi Amin and Mehedi Hasan Ome alias Rafi came out of the court.

Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police's deputy commissioner (Media) Faruk Hossain said Mehedi Hasan Omi alias Rafi, 24, is an accused in the case filed over the snatching of two militants from the Dhaka Judge Court premises.

Police, however, immediately did not disclose the time and place of his arrest.

Mehedi is a member of the Military Wing of banned extremist outfit Ansar Al-Islam, said the police officer. He hailed from Sylhet district. "This Rafi also took part in blogger Nazimuddin Samad killing mission," Faruk Hossain said.

Four persons boarding on two motorcycles arrived at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court late Sunday morning and snatched two militants from police custody sprayed chemicals in the eyes of a police constable. They left the court premises with the two militants– Mainul Islam Shamim and Abu Siddique Sohel.

Mainul and Sohel are among eight extremists sentenced to death for killing publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan in 2015. Sohel was also handed a death sentence for killing Bangladeshi-American writer and blogger Avijit Roy in the same year.

A case was filed with the Kotwali Police Station in Dhaka over the snatching incident against 20 named persons and 20 other unidentified persons.
