Information Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Zahed Ur Rahman said there have long been questions and doubts among the people of Bangladesh over India’s role in the country’s political situation in the past and in helping a particular government remain in power.

He made the remarks in response to a journalist’s question at the weekly press briefing held at the conference room of the Department of Mass Communication at the Secretariat on Tuesday (11 August).

Responding to a question about the government’s position regarding the Prime Minister’s meeting with the Indian high commissioner, the information adviser said Bangladesh had presented the matter to India very firmly, as reflected in the briefing given by the foreign minister and the government’s public statements.

The information adviser said he believes India needs to create a favourable environment from its side for future relations with Bangladesh. He said former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a death-row convict, and this was clearly highlighted in Bangladesh’s statement issued following her remarks.

The information adviser further said that although India later attempted to state that it had no involvement in the incident, from Bangladesh’s perspective, there remain questions about India’s involvement or support at some level in the matter.

He said Bangladesh’s relations with India should not be with any particular individual or government, but rather with the people of Bangladesh.

The information adviser also remarked that the relations between the two countries need to be newly structured or “realigned” in the future.
