Fire at Rohingya camps under control, 2,000 shanties gutted, one held

A devastating fire that broke out at Rohingya camps in Ukhiya of Cox's Bazar on Sunday afternoon has been brought under control after three hours.  

Deputy Assistant Director of Cox's Bazar Fire Service Atish Chakma said the fire originated in a house of Block-B at Camp-11 at Balukhali around 3pm and soon spread to three other camps. The fire was doused around 6pm. 

The estimated extent of the damage caused by the fire could not be known immediately, he said, adding that they are working on it.

Officer-in-Charge of Ukhiya Police Station Sheikh Mohammad Ali said nine units of fire fighters rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. Around 2,000 shanties were gutted during the fire incident but no casualties were reported, he said.

ABPn-8 Senior Assistant Police Super Faruk Ahmed the fire broke out around 3pm at Camp-11 and soon engulfed the adjacent Camp-9, Camp-10 and Camp -12.

The cause of the fire could not be known immediately but they arrested a youth on suspicion.

Meanwhile, Rohingya people claimed that it is a planned sabotage activity of ARSA men.

Earlier, a massive fire broke out at the Rohingya camp on March 22, 2021. Eleven people died and 500 injured and 9,000 shanties gutted during the incident.
