Finally, 62,000 eggs come from India, price per egg stands at Tk7.23

The first shipment of eggs has arrived in Bangladesh from India through Benapole land port, 49 days after the government allowed the import of eggs against the backdrop of soaring price of the essential protein source.

The consignment with 295 cartons, containing 62,000 eggs, entered the land port around 3.30pm on Sunday and more shipments are in the pipeline, Mehedi Hasan, assistant director of the land port, told the Daily Sun.

The price per egg from India including duty stands at Tk7.23 when per dozen of eggs are being sold at Tk 60 in the retail market in the capital Dhaka.

The commerce ministry fixed the maximum retail price of farm eggs at Tk12 on September 14 and the ministry started permitting to import of eggs on September 17

A total of 15 companies have been given permission to import 15 crore eggs and each company will import one crore.
