The High Court on Wednesday granted 4-week anticipatory bail to expelled Awami League leader and Laxmipur union chairman Selim Khan in a corruption case.
After hearing on the bail petition, an HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice Bishwajit Devnath passed the order.
Adv Momtaj Uddin Fakir stood in the court on behalf of the petitioner, while Md Khurshid Alalm Khan stood for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The anti-graft body on August 1 filed a case against Selim Khan on charge of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 34.5 crore and hiding wealth information.
Later on August 14, the High Court ordered to surrender him within three weeks.
On September 20, 2020, the commission issued a notice to Selim Khan and his wife Shahanara Begum asking them to submit their wealth statements after finding preliminary evidence of illegal assets.
The ACC team conducted a raid on April 6 this year following allegations of misappropriation of around Tk400 crore by showing a price of about 20 times higher than the government fixed price for land acquisition of Chandpur University of Science and Technology.
However, he could not embezzle the amount as the matter came to light, said the commission secretary.
On April 27, ACC imposed a ban on foreign travel for Lakshmipur Union Parishad Chairman Selim Khan.
Selim Khan has been expelled from the party permanently for tarnishing the image of the party.
On May 29, the Appellate Division canceled the High Court judgement allowing Selim Khan to extract sand from the Meghna River in Chandpur.
