A Bangladeshi couple from Canada got married mid-air on a Bangladesh Biman flight on their way to Sylhet.
The couple, Khairul Hasan and Saoda Binte Sanjida, tied the knot on Sunday, around 15,000ft up in the air on BG603 flight, said Tahera Khandaker, Biman’s public relations officer.
“This is the second Biman wedding in Bangladesh. We collaborated with the couple a month ago for the necessary formalities,” said Tahera.
As many as 16 family members from both sides and a marriage officiant were on board to witness this one-of-a-kind ceremony, planned by the groom.
The groom, Khairul, told Dhaka Tribune: "I have taken this initiative to make this memorable moment of my life even more special. I miss the road trips I used to take in Bangladesh, hence I have been travelling since I came back here.”
The adventurous groom said he has toured all 64 districts of Bangladesh and has experience in driving 5,000km in five days from Vancouver to Winnipeg in Manitoba.
The marriage officiant, Omar Farooq, got the couple married right after the flight took off from Dhaka. All other passengers of the flight joined in the prayer, creating a festive atmosphere among them.
After the wedding was officiated, all the passengers celebrated on board, by taking pictures with the newlyweds and congratulating them.
After landing, the couple visited the famous tea gardens in Sylhet, and flew back to Dhaka the same day.
Khairul Hasan works as a project lead at Thrive Digital Company in Vancouver, and the bride Saoda works for a well-known research institute in Toronto as a regulatory affairs coordinator.
