Bangladesh demands accountability for attacks on peacekeepers

Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations (UN) Muhammad Abdul Muhith on Thursday said accountability must be ensured for attacks on peacekeepers.

He said this in a speech at the opening ceremony of the “Group of Friends” formed to ensure accountability and protection of crimes against peacekeepers.

According to a notification, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, France, Morocco and Nepal are co-chairs of the “Group of Friends to Promote Accountability for Crimes Against Peacekeepers” launched on Thursday.

In his speech, Muhith said that with the aim of ensuring accountability and protecting peacekeepers, he would maintain effective communication with the host country.

He also called for a speedy investigation into the attacks, implementing digital technology, and stopping the spread of incorrect information over the incidents.

Permanent representatives of five other countries also gave speeches on behalf of their respective nations.

Minister of External Affairs of the Government of India S Jaishankar said: “UN Peacekeeping today has become more challenging than ever before. Peace operations are also being conducted in an ambiguous and complex environment.”

He also underlined the importance of monitoring the situation on a regular basis.
