Verdict against Tarique, Zubaida: BNP to hold rally in Dhaka today
Politics

BNP will hold a rally in the capital on Friday protesting the verdict against party's acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman in a graft case.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programme at a press conference at the party’s NayaPaltan central office on Thursday.

BNP’s Dhaka south and north city units and Dhaka district unit will arrange the demonstration in front of the party’s Nayapaltan central office around 2pm.

The BNP leader said a 'dictated' court verdict was given against their acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman with a motive to put his leadership into question and thwart the ongoing movement.

On Wednesday (July 2), a Dhaka court sentenced BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman to nine years imprisonment and his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman to three years in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2007.

Judge Md Asaduzzaman of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court handed down the verdict against Tarique and Zubaida who have long been staying in London.

The court also fined Tarique Tk 3 crore and Zubaida Tk 35 lakh.
