US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor will arrive in Dhaka on today for a high-level visit, marking the first trip to Bangladesh by a senior US official since the country's 13th parliamentary election.

Sergio Gor, who also serves as the US ambassador to India, is expected to hold meetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as well as leaders of major political parties and key institutions during his visit.

Analysts believe the visit comes at a time when Bangladesh's growing economic engagement with China has drawn Washington's attention following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent visit to Beijing.

They say the United States is likely to emphasise the importance of maintaining close bilateral relations with Bangladesh.

International relations expert Prof Delwar Hossain said the envoy is expected to assess how Bangladesh aligns with the Trump administration's foreign policy priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.

Economists described the visit as an important opportunity for Bangladesh to advance its economic interests.

Economist Dr Mahfuz Kabir said Bangladesh should prioritise discussions on the withdrawal of the recently imposed 10% US tariff on Bangladeshi products and pursue policy reforms that could encourage greater US investment in the country.
