Mominul Haque doesn’t want to remain as the captain of Bangladesh Test team. The left-handed batter revealed his decision to the media following a meeting with Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan at the latter’s residence on Tuesday evening.

BCB is yet to make a statement on the decision.

“I told them [BCB president Nazmul in the meeting] that I have not been able to contribute for the team as the captain for past few series. I am not being able to inspire my team. I think it is better to have someone else take the charge. I have told them and now the decision depends on them,” said Mominul to the media.

Bangladesh Test captain Mominul has recently been under heavy criticism for his below par performance with the bat along-side the team failures. In the just concluded Test series at home against visitors Sri Lanka, Mominul scored just 11 runs in three innings in the series [two in Chittagong Test and nine and nought in Dhaka Test] in the series. Bangladesh lost the series 1-0 at home.

Prior to this series, the left-hander scored just one fifty-plus innings in his last 12 innings, and totaled just 165 runs with a below par average of 15. Mominul since given the charge as the captain has led Bangladesh in 17 Tests and won three including the historical victory against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui earlier this year.

“I am trying to focus more on my batting at the moment. I think that will be better for me. There is a board meeting ahead [on June 2]. They will take a decision there [I think],” Mominul informed.

Ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan has been one name being discussed highly to take charge from Mominul. BCB president Nazmul however defers from the opinion and emphasized that Shakib first needs to decide on his availability for the national team duty.

“I heard about it yesterday [Monday that Shakib is being tipped as the next Test captain]. Shakib was always in all the formats for Bangladesh. But before reaching a decision [of making Shakib the Test captain], I at least need to know whether Shakib will play or not. If he becomes captain then he cannot pick and choose [between series and tours]. First, we need to know what Shakib's plan is,” said the BCB boss.
