The High Court on Wednesday ordered Dr Maksuda Farida Akter Mili to surrender within four weeks at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court in Dhaka.
A two-member HC bench of Justice Md Zakir Hossain and Justice Biswajit Debnath passed the directive after hearing the bail petition of Dr Mili of Central Hospital in a case over the death of a newborn and its mother allegedly in wrong treatment.
The HC also directed police not to harass her during this period of time.
At that time, Dr Mili was present at the HC.
Earlier, Dr Mili filed the bail petition through her lawyer in the case lodged against her and other over the death of the newborn and its mother due to the hospital's negligence and wrong treatment.
At about 12:50pm on June 9, victim a pregnant patient Mahbuba Rahman Akhi was admitted to Central Hospital under the supervision of gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Sangjukta Saha after her labour pain. But, Dr Sangjukta Saha was not present at the hospital on that day and she was out of the country. But the hospital authorities told the patient's relatives that she was present and working inside the Operation Theatre (OT). Then two her assistants tried to deliver the newborn. When attempts of normal delivery by another doctor was unsuccessful, the baby was delivered through a surgical procedure and it was kept at NICU.
Unfortunately, the newborn died the following day allegedly due to lack of oxygen following wrong surgical procedures. Akhi, while undergoing treatment at LabAid Hospital, died in the afternoon on June 18.
Meanwhile, following the newborn's death, Akhi's husband Yakub Ali Sumon filed a case of negligence leading to death at Dhanmondi Police Station on June 14.
In the case, Dr Shahzadi, Dr Muna, Dr Mili, assistant Jamir, Ehsan, and hospital manager Parvez were named as accused.
Furthermore, several unidentified individuals have been made accused in the case. Subsequently, after the case was filed, the police arrested Dr Shahzadi and Dr Muna from the hospital. They are now in jail as the court denied them bail.
