Bangladesh and the United States have signed a strategic civil nuclear cooperation agreement, according to a Facebook post by the BNP Media Cell on Saturday.
Rehan Asad, the Prime Minister’s Adviser for Science and Technology, signed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh, while Jacob Helberg signed it on behalf of the United States on 25 September.
The agreement will further strengthen opportunities for mutual cooperation between the two countries in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, science and technology, and various related fields.
Cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States on the peaceful use of nuclear energy is not a new initiative. The initiative for such cooperation was taken in 1981 during the tenure of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
US government documents also contain information about the signing of an agreement between the two countries in Dhaka on 17 September 1981, concerning the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
In continuation of that cooperation, Bangladesh and the United States have now signed a new agreement.
