Dengue: Death toll rises to 88 as five more die in 24hrs

Five more dengue patients died in 24 hours till Wednesday morning, raising the death toll from the mosquito-borne disease in country to 88 this year.

A total of 1, 246 more patients were admitted to different hospitals with the viral fever during the period, said a Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) press release.

Among the patients, 709 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka and the rest outside it.

A total of 3, 791 dengue patients, including 2, 530 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.

The DGHS has, so far, recorded 16, 143 dengue cases while some 12, 264 patients released from hospitals this year.

The country logged 281 dengue deaths in 2022 – the highest on record after 179 deaths recorded in 2019. Also, it recorded 62,423 dengue cases and 61,971 recoveries last year.

DGHS has recently issued comprehensive instructions on prevention of dengue infection as the mosquito-borne tropical disease has increased sharply in the current year.

According to the DGHS data, dengue infection has increased five times since January 1 to May 31, 2023.

Meanwhile, DGHS on Wednesday said dengue test will be done at Tk 50 instead of Tk 100 in all government hospitals of the country in the next one month.

It advises that in case of dengue fever, more liquid food should be taken like saline, coconut water, lemon juice, fruit juice and soup.
