Cyclone Sitrang might hit coastal areas by tonight

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman said cyclonic storm Sitrang might hit the country by Monday evening.

It has turned into a severe cyclone. According to the met office, Sitranh is to hit Bangladesh this evening and will cross the coastal areas by 6-7 am on Tuesday.

Residents of the coastal areas of Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts have been asked to take shelter in cyclone centres within Monday morning as Cyclone Sitrang is expected to make landfall on the southern Bangladeshi coast by early Tuesday.

Maritime ports of Mongla and Payra already have been advised to lower Local Cautionary Signal No 4 and to hoist Danger Signal No 7 as the cyclonic storm Sitrang is approaching Bangladesh.  

The vulnerable people of the coastal areas of Koyra, Mongla, Ashashuni have been asked to take shelter in the centres.

Koyra Upazila Nirbahi officer Md Roknuzzaman said following the maritime signal issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department asking to hoist danger signal no seven, announcements are being made in the vulnerable areas. All the residents in the area are being asked to go to shelters before evening. 

As many as 108 cyclone centres have been prepared in Koira upazila. 

Komlesh Mazumder, upazila nirbahi officer of Mongla upazila, said that people are being asked to take shelters in cyclone centres after taking launch. They have to reach the centres before evening as the cyclonic storm Sitrang is likely to hit before 12am.
