Renowned novelist Selina Hossain began her career at the Bangla Academy and dedicated a significant portion of her life to various activities within the organization. In 1997, she became the first female director of the Bangla Academy.

Selina Hossain, a prominent figure in Bengali literature, embodies modernity and forward-thinking. Her writings, based on diverse life experiences, have resonated with readers in different languages. What sets Selina Hossain's works apart is their unique subject variety.

Drawing on the foundations of fiction, Hossain paints a vivid literary canvas with numerous characters, both in her stories and novels. Although she initially entered the literary arena through poetry, she began writing stories in the mid-sixties while studying at the university. Her literature reflects the state, society, people, and the essence of her country. Her passion lies solely in writing, and her stories and novels have been translated into multiple languages worldwide. Several colleges and universities, both within the country and abroad, have included her work as part of their curriculum.

Born in Rajshahi city in 1947, Selina Hossain is an influential Bengali writer who obtained an MA degree in Bengali language and literature in 1968. Due to her father's occupation, she had the opportunity to witness the nature of Bengal, which later manifested in her writings. She possessed a deep understanding of people's lives, always observing the past through the lens of the present. This consciousness elevated her literature, enriching Bengali literature as a whole.

In Selina Hossain's writings, society, politics, economy, and culture emerge as fundamental elements. Politics holds a prominent position in her works, including the novel 'Bhoomi O Kusum,' which explores the issue of enclaves. Her novel 'Magna Chaitanya Shish' revolves around urban life, tackling self-crises, bigotry, and middle-class tensions. By delving into the psychology of civic life, she charts an intriguing narrative trajectory. While she explores various themes through her stories, novels, and essays, Hossain also produced remarkable works on the Liberation War. Her novel 'Hangor Nadi Grenade,' published in 1976, received widespread acclaim within literary circles, later adapted into a film. Since 2005, it has been included as part of an Asian literature course in the literature department of Oakton College in Chicago. In 'The House of Insects,' she vividly depicts the arduous struggles of people living along riverbanks and coastlines, capturing the human fight for survival.

The writings of the renowned poet Selina Hossain serve as a lens through which the light or darkness of our history, tradition, and society can be easily perceived.

It is evident that Rabindranath Tagore, the great poet, is a significant source of inspiration for Selina Hossain, influencing both her life and literature. Selina Hossain pays tribute to the life and literary works of this global poet. For two decades, the foundation named after her daughter, Faria Lara, has been working tirelessly to preserve her memory and provide comprehensive support to marginalized women, girls, children, and ordinary people, aiming to solve the issue of unemployment and build a poverty-free Bangladesh.

Selina Hossain believes that women writers must strive for individuality and carve their own path in the literary world. Her writings consistently address women's personality and psychological crises, shedding light on these issues from a female perspective.
