Former president of Kushtia District Chhatra League Gazi Anis, who attempted to commit suicide by setting himself on fire, in front of the National Press Club, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

Gazi Anis breathed his last at around 6:10am while undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn And Plastic Surgery, said Dr Samanta Lal Sen.

Witnesses said the former BCL leader suddenly set himself on fire in front of the National Press Club at about 5.00 pm on Monday out of his frustration over a company's refusal to pay him Tk1.26 crore in dues.

Later, police members, who were present at the scene, doused the fire by pouring water and rushed him to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in critical condition.

Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, said that 85 percent of his body, including his face was burnt.

Anis told the journalists that a company named Henolux owes him Tk1.26 crore, but refused to pay.

Earlier, he formed a human chain, demanding the dues, but to no avail. As Anis did not get his money back, he decided to end his life by setting himself on fire.
