Awami League leader Md Salim Khan will not be allowed to extract sand from the river Meghna.
The Supreme Court on Sunday passed the order scrapping the High Court verdict that permitted the Awami League leader to extract sand from the river Meghna in Chandpur.
A three-member Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, passed the order.
Senior lawyer Ajmalul Hossain QC appeared for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Kazi Mainul Hasan represented the state.
Mainul Hasan said the Appellate Division today quashed the HC judgment given in 2016 allowing Salim sand extraction. As a result, he can no longer lift sand.
The High Court on May 23 refused to allow Salim Khan to extract and sale of 28.4 lakh cubic feet sand or earth from Meghna riverbed at Shakhua, Ichuli and Mirzapur mouza under Chandpur Sadar Upazila and also Monipur and Charkrishnapur mouza under Haimchar upazila in the district.
Salim Khan is the chairman of Laxmipur Model Union Parishad of Chandpur.
